As wireless service providers look for new revenue opportunities, the smart grids being planned by utilities in North America and Europe are receiving more and more attention. Not all power providers are willing to outsource their communications networks, so some telecom companies are learning that strategic partnerships can make the difference.

The system uses a mesh radio network to aggregate data from home-based smart meters. BT’s Ed Hicks demonstrated the smart grid lab and its command and control center for RCR Wireless News.
