Regional wireless operator Revol Wireless is set to shutter operations on Jan. 16, though noted that select wireless retail locations will soon begin offering services from Sprint’s Boost Mobile division.
“All Revol stores will stop taking bill payments after Tuesday December 17,” Revol notes on its website. “If you have paid for your Revol service through December 17, your service will remain active through January 16. All Revol service will terminate at 11:59 pm on January 16, 2014 and no refunds will be given for paid service beyond this date.”
The news comes on the heels of the Federal Communications Commission accepting a filing from Revol’s parent company Cleveland Unlimited to transfer 12 spectrum licenses in the 1.9 GHz band to Sprint for an undisclosed amount. The licenses cover portions of Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The deal would not include any of Revol’s current customer base. The filing notes that the licenses include between 10 and 16.4 megahertz covering 56 counties in 23 cellular market areas.
Revol began in 2005 following the acquisition of Ohio-based Northcoast PCS, including its CDMA network and spectrum. Revol offered services targeting the youth market, with a no-contract unlimited calling and messaging service in Cleveland, Dayton and Toledo. The carrier soon expanded its reach by acquiring Leap Wireless’ Toledo and Sandusky, Ohio, operations. Despite the recent loss of MetroPCS and pending loss of Leap Wireless from the no-contract, unlimited services market a number of larger operators and new mobile virtual network operators have entered the space.
Revol claims on its website that on Dec. 18 select retail locations will become Boost Mobile stores and that through Dec. 24 Revol customers will be eligible for a free Boost phone, can keep their existing number and receive a free month of Boost service.
