Using a handheld cell phone while driving is illegal in 12 states, but now the largest of those is clarifying its law. California drivers can now look at maps on mobile devices while driving. This week a state appeals court ruled in favor of a man who was fined $165 for checking a map on his iPhone while stuck in traffic. The court said the California ban on cell phones applies to people listening and talking, not using their phones in other ways. Those other ways cannot include texting – a separate California law bans texting and driving.
