MWC 2014: M2M recycling with Gemalto – more efficiency with less emission

BARCELONA, Spain – Digital security specialist Gemalto (NYSE: GTO) is bringing machine-to-machine (M2M) technology to cities with a solution that the company says can pay for itself within a year. The smart collective recycling container uses an ultrasound distance center that measures the exact level of refuse in any given location within a city.

“This is highlighting a real life use case where M2M can be put to good use to highlight efficiency, in this case with smart, connective recycling containers,” said Manfred Kube, head of M2M segment marketing and director of business development, at Gemalto.

The tool sends alerts through the use of a machine identification module card to a service collecting company, telling them when the container needs to be emptied.  Trucks are only deployed when the containers need emptying, sabing time, money and energy for all involved.

“The return on investment from the savings on fuel through optimized routing on those trucks can be there within a year,” Kube stated.

This M2M tool uses a sense of logic through a cloud based platform and can also monitor temperature, geo-location and web based values. This information can help to re-route entire fleets of trucks, save money on fuel, and a lot of time and resource in the collection chain.
