Analyst: Russia’s LTE market set to boom
A new report from Maravedis-Rethink forecasts a major opportunity for equipment vendors in Russia. But the nation’s efforts to promote a homegrown wireless equipment vendor have faltered, and Ericsson, NSN, and Huawei have all won major LTE contracts in Russia.

This may represent a failure of central government policy, but not a failure by the mobile carriers themselves,” writes analyst Caroline Gabriel. “The three major cellcos – MTS, MegaFon and Vimpelcom – are all racing to build out 4G services and the Rostelecom/Tele2 mobile merger should provide a viable new competitor.”

The Russian government says that over 10,000 LTE base stations have now been deployed in 50 regions of the country. The Moscow Times reports that almost half of urban mobile phone users in Russia now have smartphones. As smartphone penetration increases, many consumers may migrate directly to LTE.

Huawei and Telefonica test SDN-based IP and optical synergy
Huawei and Telefonica announced the successful completion of a joint test of SDN-based IP and Optical synergy using commercially available routers and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) optical transport platforms. The tests included multi-layer restoration, multi-domain label switched path (LSP) creation, and online network survivability analysis. The tests used commercially available Huawei Routers and Optical Transport Network (OTN) and Reconfigurable Optical Add-drop Multiplexer (ROADM) optical transport platforms,

Ericsson, NSN both announce video optimization solutions
Ericsson has launched a new virtualized encoder that is meant to help operators dynamically select the best encoding method and platform based on the priorities for deployment speed, video quality and output. The solution targets operators who want to deliver video on multiple screens.

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) has inked a deal with ChinaCache to incorporate ChinaCache’s content delivery network (CDN) technology into NSN’s Liquid Applications solution. Liquid Applications is NSN’s name for technology that moves content to the edge of the network, inside the base station.
