SevOne launches appliance for log data analytics

Performance monitoring company SevOne has launched what it says is the industry’s first appliance for log data analytics.
The SevOne Performance Log Appliance is designed to allow real-time analytics on large volumes of log data, according to the company, allowing enterprises to have a better understanding of the behavior of users, customers and applications, as well as their own network and IT infrastructure.
“There’s a general mindset that log analytics isn’t easy, that it requires time, effort and education in order to get value out of log analytics,” said Scott Frymire, director of marketing for SevOne.
He said that typically, analyzing log analytics takes place as troubleshooting after issues have already occurred, and involve manual searching and correlating of data from separate systems. The new appliance, according to Frymire, reduces the time involved in those activities through automation and provides proactive alerts.
“We firmly believe that success with log data analytics is measured by the extent to what you can automate the extraction of actionable insight from logs,” Frymire said.
The Performance Log Appliance works in conjunction with SevOne’s flagship Performance Appliance Solution, which automatically generates baselines for normal network activity over time, and alerts based on deviations from normal activity rather than a static alarm approach. For instance, Frymire said, a large back-up that regularly runs over the network can set off alarms each time, but SevOne’s solution would recognize the recurring backup as normal.
Frymire said that SevOne saw market demand, including within its own customer base, for integrating log data into a company’s performance monitoring picture.
SevOne serves communication service providers, wireless operators including Bell Mobility, and large enterprises such as investment banks and pharmaceutical companies for network performance monitoring. The company received a $150 million influx of cash from Bain Capital in 2013, and has more than doubled its employee head count in the past 18 months, according to Frymire.
The log analytics product is a direct result of SevOne’s acquisition of log analytics provider RapidEngines earlier this year.
