October 1 — Starting today, Verizon Wireless customers who use more than 4.7 GB of monthly data on an unlimited plan could experience slower speeds on the carrier’s LTE network. Verizon has let its customers know that its new network optimization policy starts today, but the policy only kicks in when a customer is using a congested cell site. In addition, Verizon will only slow data speeds for customers who have fulfilled their minimum contract terms.
Verizon says that network optimization is not the same thing as throttling. “With throttling, your wireless data speed is reduced for your entire cycle, 100% of the time, no matter where you are,” according to the carrier. “Network optimization is based on the theory that all customers should have the best network possible, and if you’re not causing congestion for others, even if you are using a high amount of data, your connection speed should be as good as possible.”
Verizon is not the only carrier to implement LTE data network optimization. T-Mobile US has said that it will slow data speeds for customers who break its rules by using its LTE network for peering and tethering.
