Mobility in the enterprise has moved beyond device management to applications and from stand-alone solutions to a full platform approach to mobility, and adoption of custom business apps is exploding, according to the latest quarterly mobility survey from Good Technology.
Custom app adoption in the enterprise was up 107% from the previous quarter and up 731% year-over-year, Good reported. Custom apps were the most-activated category of app on Good’s secure enterprise mobility platform, followed by document editing, document access, secure browser and secure instant messaging applications as well as business intelligence information.
Good noted that app usage diverges between smartphones and tablets:Â Smartphone users are most likely to activate custom apps to access business information, while tablet users seem to be using their devices for document-based work.
Every quarter, Good’s survey analyzes the ongoing impact of mobile apps and platforms on its customer base, which includes Fortune 100 companies across a variety of industries. The most recent quarter, it said, “spotlights the continued adoption of enterprise mobile apps, particularly custom apps that both extend existing business processes and impact business transformation. While we continue to see an increase in third-party apps such as document editing, document access, instant messaging and mobile (customer relationship management/CRM), this quarter, custom-developed apps take the lead in our report, signaling the increased number of organizations moving to mobile business processes to gain business advantage.”
Among the report findings:
- The release of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus reversed Android’s market share gains vs. Apple. Total iOS activations were up 2% from the previous quarter to 69%, while Android’s activation share dropped by 2%. Meanwhile, Windows devices accounted for just 1% of device activations – a figure which has been consistent for six quarters, Good noted.
- 85% of the new iPhone activations were for iPhone 6, with just 15% coming from iPhone 6 Plus.
- Android gained market share in tablet activations for the second straight quarter, although iOS continued to dominate. Android accounted for 11% of tablet activations in July-September 2014, with 89% coming from iOS tablets.
- Custom apps were the top app category on smartphones, while document editing apps were the top app on tablets.
