A conversation with Hiroshi Kawai, director, technology development department and wireless technology department technology division, SoftBank
As part of our upcoming report “Charting the path to RAN virtualization: C-RAN, fronthaul and HetNets,” which Senza Fili prepared in collaboration with RCR Wireless News, we talked to Hiroshi Kawai, director, technology development department and wireless technology department technology division, at SoftBank. The operator has been among the first to use C-RAN topologies in commercial deployment and has seen the advantages remote baseband brings in terms of costs and performance.
“It is important for even small cells that the interference of adjacent cells is controlled, just as it is with regular cells. We were already thinking to use C-RAN and dark fiber for fronthaul when we were considering whether to implement small cells. Dark fiber is available almost everywhere here in Japan.” Hiroshi-san said.
