RootMetrics deal bolsters IHS’ telecom focus
Analytics firm IHS announced plans to acquire privately held network performance measurement company RootMetrics for an undisclosed amount.
Network performance measurements have become an increasingly important component of marketing efforts by mobile operators looking to differentiate themselves in a hotly contested market. RootMetrics has been central to many of these marketing efforts, tapping into its direct and application-based measurement analytics.
RootMetrics’ network rankings include domestic performance graded on nationwide, city-by-city and airport comparisons, as well as cellular coverage for Canada and the United Kingdom. The firm compiles the results in its RootScore and RootAward rankings.
RootMetrics was founded in Bellevue, Wash., in 2008, and currently employs 170 people.
The move further bolsters IHS’ push into the telecom market, following its acquisition of Infonetics Research last December. IHS had previously purchased iSuppli in late 2010 for $95 million.
“The acquisition of RootMetrics will significantly strengthen our position in telecommunications, the largest segment within the technology information space,” said Scott Key, IHS president and CEO, in a statement. “Along with the acquisition of Infonetics Research last December, this acquisition firmly establishes IHS as a leading provider of telecom analytics and market intelligence and supports our core strategy of offering capabilities globally across industry verticals.”
IHS focuses on a number of industry verticals, including aerospace and defense, automotive, chemical, energy, health care, maritime and technology.
