Videos: 5G Trends in Testing

Network testing and telecom experts will be gathering in Del Mar, Calif., next week at the LTE Innovation Summit to discuss the impact of a host of industry trends on network testing, from the continued evolution of LTE and LTE-Advanced to the implications of 5G trends in testing.

Olga Shapiro, program manager for the test and measurement practice at Frost & Sullivan, will be one of the first presenters at the two-day #LIS2015 conference. She will be speaking on testing trends, touching on topics such as the state of LTE-Advanced deployments, hetnets, voice over LTE and the “Internet of Things” and their impact on network testing and test equipment.

“As the Internet of Things is quickly moving into various industries as well as applications, the telecom industry in particular will see a great number of smaller, faster and wearable devices for consumers,” Shapiro said.

A major focus of the show’s second day, 5G presentations will include one from Wilhelm Keusgen of the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, which has been working on 5G channel models as part of a European 5G effort that includes test company Anite. Other sessions range from public safety LTE, LTE-unlicensed and license-assisted access, and massive MIMO in LTE-Advanced and 5G, with experts from companies including Texas Instruments, Samsung and Ethertronics.

“We’re trying to maintain a balance between LTE and 5G because LTE is not over,” said Andreas Roessler, technology manager for North America for Rohde & Schwarz, which hosts the conference. “There are a lot of new things coming, while everybody is talking about 5G and what that might be, and what it looks like, and what you should focus on.”

For additional insight on the 5G ecosystem, RCR Wireless News spoke with Frost & Sullivan industry director Jessy Cavazos. She has been following the development of 5G, and spoke about the role that test and measurement companies are playing in the early development of 5G technologies.

Test companies, she said, “will have a critical role in the development of 5G. None of these technologies can actually make it without test and measurement, so they’re really enablers. Test companies are really essential to further the 5G agenda, and then beyond that, they can also help accelerate the transition of 5G technologies with hardware and software tools that basically accelerate the movement of these technologies through the life cycle from concept to commercialization and then to deployment.”
