EMEA: Sierra Wireless expands in Europe with MobiquiThings acquisition

Sierra Wireless announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MobiquiThings in a move to expand its presence in the European market. The acquisition is expected to be completed by August.

Although Sierra Wireless is a well-known name in the world of embedded modules and gateways along with its M2M Cloud; MobiquiThings might be a new name in the mobile virtual network operator area. Sierra Wireless

In support of its device-to-cloud strategy, Sierra Wireless acquired Wireless Maingate earlier this year. Wireless Maingate provided additional presence in the Pan-European market, but the majority of the customers are located in the Nordics. This was the first step into being a connectivity provider as an MVNO. By adding MobiquiThings to the portfolio, the geographic presence is now expanded to add customers in central Europe. The key goals of the acquisition in support of this strategy are:

  • Addition of more than 100,000 wireless connectivity subscribers
  • Comprehensive, multi-network coverage across EMEA with strong mobile network operator partners
  • Secure, robust core network with high capacity & availability
  • Unique, patented multi-IMSI technology
  • Leadership position in energy, transportation, security, utilities, healthcare and retail
  • Adds more than 75 customers across EMEA region.

MobiquiThings’ MobiquiSIM is a SIM with embedded intelligence designed to select the network with the best signal quality to be used for the “thing” being connected based on service level agreement parameters for the service.

“The purchase of MobiquiThings further accelerates our device-to-cloud strategy and is highly complementary to our acquisition of Wireless Maingate completed in January,” said Jason Cohenour, president and CEO of Sierra Wireless. “MobiquiThings has a highly advanced core network and technology platform, as well as a rapidly expanding customer base. MobiquiThings will be tightly integrated with Maingate and our AirVantage® cloud to provide a leading-edge managed connectivity service for pan-European customers.”
