Real world view on NFV, SDN deployments

Nokia Networks provides some reality into NFV and SDN deployment plans

The world of telecom network virtualization has been active as vendors, operators and standards bodies have been working feverishly towards equipment, services and technology taking advantage of network functions virtualization, software-defined networking and cloud platforms in order to boost network performance. This work has so far led to a number of proof-of-concept agreements and a limited number of actual deployments by telecom operators using NFV, SDN and cloud.

Nokia Networks has been an active member of this work from the vendor side, providing solutions for PoCs and commercial deployments. This work has provided the company with meaningful insight into the progress and challenges facing this continued move towards virtualization.

On this week’s NFV/SDN Reality Check, we spoke with Sandro Tavares, head of business development for telco cloud at Nokia Networks, to garner some of the knowledge the company has gleaned. Tavares touched on topics including recent successes in NFV and SDN deployments; how mobile operators are approaching the move towards virtualization; challenges still facing the industry; and the impact new technologies and services like 5G, small cells and the “Internet of Things” are having on deployment plans.

Make sure to join us on Sept. 4 for our next live episode of NFV/SDN Reality Check when we speak with Robert Haim, principal analyst at ACG Research, on the capital expense and operating expense challenges facing telecom operators looking at NFV and SDN deployments.
