Sprint now offers customers option to purchase 4 GB or 6 GB data plans
One week after throwing out a free wireless service offer to DirecTV customers, Sprint has expanded the pitch to now include additional data for an additional fee.
Sprint said it will continue to offer the free year of mobile service that includes unlimited domestic calling, text messaging and 2 gigabytes of data per line, but will now allow customers to purchase up to 4 GB of data for $10 per month or 6 GB of data for $20 per month. The offer is still limited to a total of five new lines of service, is still open to DirecTV customers switching to Sprint or existing Sprint customers adding a line of service and set to run through Sept. 30.
Customers that have already taken advantage of the offer can call Sprint to add more data if needed.
In order to qualify for the offer, customers need to pay full retail price for a smartphone or add a new line of service through Sprint Lease, iPhone Forever or Sprint Easy Pay. Existing Sprint customers need to add a new line in order to qualify.
Sprint initially launched the program in a move to counter AT&T’s acquisition of DirecTV and subsequent bundling of mobile and satellite television services. Analysts had noted several limitations to Sprint’s offer, including a $36 per-line activation fee, the need for customers to pay taxes on their service and a 1.5 cent per-megabyte overage fee that is somewhat alleviated with the now available larger data buckets.
