AT&T NumberSync platform taps IMS core to sync phone number across multiple devices
AT&T is set to tackle multidevice integration with its NumberSync service that it said will use network technology to sync a single phone number across multiple mobile devices.
AT&T said the platform taps into its IP multimedia subsystem core to allow phone calls and text messages linked to a primary phone number to be accessed by a variety of compatible devices. As the platform is network based, AT&T said the device linked with the primary phone number does not need to be powered on or connected to the network.
The platform is also said to work across multiple operating systems and allows for the management of missed calls through a single voicemail box.
Moving forward, AT&T said the service could allow for customers to leave their smartphones behind if they are using a cellular-based fitness band or smartwatch.
“Our plan is for NumberSync to become the norm on a variety of our future connected ‘devices,’” explained David Christopher, CMO at AT&T.
The carrier said it is currently working with device and ecosystem partners on integrating the service, with an initial device launch expected “fairly soon” and additional devices launched during the upcoming holidays.
AT&T Mobility has become one of the nation’s leading operators in terms of nontraditional device adoption. “Connected devices” have been a significant driver for the carrier’s growth over the past several quarters, with the segment – including telematics and machine-to-machine devices – accounting for two-thirds of the carrier’s net additions during the second quarter. Of its traditional postpaid net connection additions, tablets accounted for all of that segment’s growth in Q2.
