Huawei Internet Plus aligned case studies – Huawei Developers Congress

Chinese equipment vendor Huawei to invest $1 billion in ICT developers cloud, API and IoT enablement platform

Huawei Internet Plus-related initiatives were showcased at the Huawei Developers Congress (#HDC2015) held in Shenzhen, China, on Oct. 18-19. During the conference, Huawei outlined a plan to invest $1 billion to build an open ICT ecosystem focused on three core areas:

  • Providing developer access to network “pipes”;
  • Open-source ICT cloud computing; and
  • A developer enablement platform

Keynote presentations from top Huawei executives, ecosystem partners and customers highlighted the company’s strategy to open-cloud computing and network infrastructure worlds to traditional ICT manufacturing, agriculture, public safety, e-commerce, energy, finance, logistics and intelligent traffic infrastructure market segments – all of which are targeted industry segments in China’s “Internet Plus” action plan announced in July, and first referenced by China’s Premier Li Keqiang in March while delivering a “Made in China 2025” presentation.

General themes from the Huawei Developers Congress included:

  • Open cloud ecosystem based upon FusionSphere, Huawei’s open cloud platform optimized for ICT convergence;
  • ICT software development toolkit;
  • Huawei’s commitment to OpenStack;
  • IoT API Connection Management Platform consisting of security, data and network APIs;
  • F5 SDN application services enablement partnership (Layer 4-Layer 7 service chaining);
  • Open Agile Network for the app, controller and device layers;
  • eLTE mobile broadband integrated voice, data and video solutions for public safety and other industries requiring mission critical, private networks (i.e. petrochemical, shipping, rail, intelligent transportation). eLTE is based on 3GPP LTE technology standards with open architecture for TETRA interoperability;
  • Innovation Factory, which offered hands-on developer interaction opportunities;
  • Huawei’s IoT chips and modules coupled with Huawei’s LiteOs 10kb operating system allowing developers to create IoT applications for devices ranging from wearables to cars; and
  • B-TrunC Industry Alliance focused on promoting the development of the broadband trunking industry.

Huawei Developers Congress follows China’s ‘Made in China 2025’ and ‘Internet Plus’ strategic plan announcements

In May, China’s State Council unveiled a 10-year plan blueprint for establishing China as an intelligent manufacturing leader among the already established industrialized leaders Germany, the United States and Japan. The program was said to be inspired by Germany’s “Industry 4.0” plan to apply information technology and “Internet of Things” to manufacturing.

In July, the council unveiled a more specific implementation plan called “Internet Plus.” According to the State Council press release, the action plan aims to integrate mobile Internet, cloud computing, big data and the IoT with modern manufacturing, to encourage the healthy development of e-commerce, industrial networks and Internet banking, and to help Internet companies increase their international presence.

China has the most Internet and cellphone users in the world. The country had 649 million Internet users by the end of 2014, and some 557 million used their cellphones to access the Internet, according to the China Internet Network Information Center data.
