HPE and China Telecom launch NFV lab

Joint NFV lab focused on NFV, SDN research

Hewlett Packard Enterprise and China Telecom Beijing Research Institute said they opened a joint lab in Beijing focused on network functions virtualization research with the intent of helping China Telecom plan for implementing NFV technologies.

The joint NFV lab is said to use HPE’s OpenNFV infrastructure stack and reference architecture in allowing China Telecom to test and verify benefits of implementing NFV and software-defined networking. HPE said it will help China Telecom test performance and virtualized functions on its Helion OpenStack Carrier Grade platform in accordance with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute NFV Industry Specification Groups.

“We believe that the integration of NFV within SDN-enabled infrastructure will be the next stage of evolution for the strategic development of the China Telecom network,” said Li Zhigang, president of the China Telecom Beijing Research Institute. “We hope that our collaborative efforts with HPE will result in the creation of NFV solutions which meet our needs, and advance the transformation of our networks.”

China Mobile earlier this year was part of a group headed by infrastructure provider Huawei that opened a NFV lab in Xi’an, China, focused on developing multivendor integration verification capabilities for NFV. China Mobile followed up that move, along with China Unicom, by signing contracts with Alcatel-Lucent to support the rollout of NFV, SDN and cloud technology.

HPE last month was split off from Hewlett-Packard, taking on the hardware giant’s servers, storage, software and network gear business. The newly thinned HP maintains the company’s personal computer and printers business. The move resulted in tens of thousands of job cuts.
