UK telecom provider O2 taps AT&T Digital Life for home automation services
LAS VEGAS – AT&T’s Digital Life home automation platform is set for an international expansion as U.K.-based O2 said it plans to commercially launch services from the offer later this year.
Speaking at this week’s AT&T Developer Conference in Las Vegas, O2 digital director David Plumb said the telecom operator is looking to offer services from the platform to its 25 million customers in the U.K. Those deployment plans include the use of “O2 Gurus” to handle installation of the various Digital Life services.
“Across a range of sectors, we’ve already seen technology evolve from analogue to digital to smart. But when it comes to our homes, the experience is mostly stuck in analog,” Plumb said. “At O2 we are building an ecosystem that will deliver a complete smart home experience. By teaming up with the very best device, platform and service providers, we will be able to give people the smartest tech for their homes.”
The partnership builds on a previous trial between AT&T and O2 parent company Telefonica announced in 2014. Telefonica was the first company to license AT&T’s Digital Life platform, which AT&T is offering as a white label solution and will not carry the AT&T brand.
“O2’s interest after our trial with Telefonica shows that Digital Life’s platform is a great fit for European markets such as the U.K.,” explained Kevin Peterson, president of the AT&T Digital Life division. “Digital Life’s platform is an end-to-end solution that pulls a variety of devices and capabilities into a single experience that allows consumers to see through the noise and manage the system through a single app.”
AT&T initially launched the Digital Life platform early 2012, announcing a suite of IP-based products, including cameras, smoke detectors, thermostats and door locks using the Z Wave home automation protocol.
