Firms looking to boost MEC technology advances, promise PoC demo at MWC
The mobile edge computing space is set to receive a boost as Quortus and Applied Computer Solutions said they plan to partner on technology supporting MEC, with plans for a proof of concept demonstration at the upcoming Mobile World Congress event.
Quortus, which is focused on developing core network functions as software applications, and ACS, which offers products and services to telecom operators and enterprises, said the partnership will result in more efficient use of network resources and monetization opportunities; increased network speeds and lower latencies to benefit content distribution; improved IT and infrastructure integration for large enterprises; and greater access to advanced services for smaller enterprises.
Quortus founder and CEO Andy Odgers cited advances in combining control and user plan functions designed to support services like local traffic offload, quality of service management and voice-over-LTE calling.
“By applying intelligence at the network edge, we simultaneously remove strain on network operators’ infrastructure and improve service and user experience,” added Bob Pike, CTO at ACS.
The firms explained MEC architectures combines wireless technology with an “IT-type service environment” to deliver the improved network performance and can “tap into local content and information about network conditions so that traffic can be handled in an optimal way.”
The planned PoC is set to include the use of MEC to deliver media, voice and data services across various scenarios, including enterprise communications, health care and public venues. The demo is set to use Quortus’ EdgeCentrix virtualized core network products and ACS’ IT infrastructure products, systems integration and end-to-end orchestration capabilities.
