Chevrolet customers with LTE-enabled OnStar vehicles offered 50% discount on data buckets, new 4 GB plan
Citing the benefits of volume, General Motors cut pricing for customer accessing its OnStar telematics service on Chevrolet models. The cellular connectivity taps AT&T Mobility’s LTE network.
The new plans begin at $10 per month for one gigabyte of data, which is a 50% discount on previous plans. The 10 GB plan also witnessed a 50% reduction to $40 per month, while a new 4 GB plan slides into the middle at $20 per month. The hardware to support the service now comes standard on all Chevrolet models sold in the U.S.
The automaker claims it has sold more than 2.1 million vehicles equipped with LTE-enabled OnStar service since mid-2014, with customers consuming more than 3 million gigabytes of data. Chevrolet further broke down usage by noting 60% of Suburban owners use the feature’s Wi-Fi hot spot service, while its high-volume Silverado trucks account for more than 1 million GB of consumed data.
“As our customers increase their usage of the technology, we are able to make it more affordable for them,” noted Sandor Piszar, marketing director for Chevrolet trucks.
In early 2013, AT&T Mobility snagged the OnStar service from Verizon Wireless, which had provided 2G and 3G telematics services to the service for nearly a decade, including through a controversial transition between analog and digital in-car offerings.
AT&T Mobility has since rapidly expanded its connected car and telematics business, signing deals with the likes of Audi in North America and through partnerships in Europe with Vodafone Group to support GM’s Open and Vauxhall divisions. The carrier also allows OnStar customers to add monthly telematics access to their regular data buckets, or add “unlimited” data at $40 per month for customers also signed up for one of AT&T’s television services.
