Intel sees a strong connection between NFV and SDN deployments and network transformation for telecommunication providers
A significant aspect of the telecommunications industry’s move toward software-based virtualization solutions using network functions virtualization and software-defined networking is the network transformation expected to take place.
Decades of work and experience running telecom networks using hardware-based models are set to be upended as operators look to drive greater efficiency and cost savings out of networks tasked with handling significantly more traffic. Much of this will be on the back of NFV and SDN deployments, which are just now beginning to enter commercial use by traditional telecom operators.
Intel, which is literally at the core of these virtualization moves thanks to the use of its x86 architecture in powering commercial off-the-shelf hardware, is also looking to help in the network transformation process. The firm notes this process includes better communication between service providers and NFV and SDN vendors; new training for employees; and unified standards bodies.
The company recently released a “network transformation maturity model” designed to outline how communication service providers can grow their NFV and SDN capabilities.
On this week’s NFV/SDN Reality Check show we spoke with Sandra Rivera, VP in the data center group and GM of the network platforms group at Intel, about the model as well as the company’s view on how it sees telecom operators and the virtualization industry maturing in order to meet future demands.
Thanks for watching this week’s show and make sure to check us out again next week when we are scheduled to speak with Argyle Data on how mobile operators are using big data and machine learning technologies for real-time fraud detection, prevention and profit.
