Orange Business Services expands IoT reach

New deal will provide IoT connectivity for Tractive’s wearables and tracking devices

Orange Business Service (OBS), the business services arm of French telecommunications group Orange, has added a new contract in the internet of things (IoT) field through an agreement with Tractive, an Austria-based developer of hardware, apps and gadgets for pet owners.

The deal provides connectivity for Tractive products and supports the company’s growing business around the world.

Under the terms of the connectivity agreement, Orange Business Services will provide Tractive with SIM cards for IoT connectivity in the Tractive GPS product which helps pet owners locate their pets. This solution allows pet owners to locate their cats and dogs in real-time via their mobile devices.

“For the services we provide to loving pet owners, seamless and interruption-resistant connectivity on a global scale is absolutely key. The Orange Business Services solution caters to our customers  needs and requirements,” Tractive’s CEO Michael Hurnaus said.

“With our proven expertize across the full spectrum of IoT services, we are very happy to have been selected as their provider of choice and to help enable their global growth ambitions,” said Anne- Sophie Lotgering, senior vice president, Europe, Russia and CIS, Orange Business Services.

The Orange Business Services IoT connectivity service is part of Datavenue, a modular IoT and Analytics solution. Orange Business Service launched Datavenua globally earlier this week.

Datavenue offers a full range of certified and tested connected objects, such as sensors, cameras or modules to connect existing assets. Datavenue has a catalog of data that includes population movement analytics using anonymized data from mobile networks.

With the solution, Orange also provides a broad range of connectivity options, including global cellular networks, worldwide fixed and satellite networks, as well as low-power solutions, such as LoRa.

Samsung launches new modules for its smart IoT platform

In related news, Korean giant Samsung Electronics has launched its expanded Samsung ARTIK Smart internet of things (IoT) platform featuring two new module families, ARTIK 0 and ARTIK 7.

Samsung said the ARTIK Smart IoT platform unifies hardware, software, cloud, security and partner ecosystems in a single offering allowing companies to reduce the time, cost and risk associated with the delivery of complex IoT solutions.

The ARTIK 0 family of modules enables low-power, lightweight devices targeted at end-devices including HVAC, lighting, industrial sensors and personal health monitoring.

Meanwhile, the ARTIK 7 family of modules is intended for high-end gateways and multimedia applications. The ARTIK 7 module features built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Thread and GbE MAC interfaces. It also includes a high-end multimedia processor for video and audio processing.

The new modules are designed to work with the Samsung ARTIK Cloud, an open data-exchange platform that connects devices, applications and other clouds, enabling interoperability between so-called things.
