Hertz to deploy Telefonica telematics solution in Mexico

The telematics solution will be offered through the Spanish telco’s Smart M2M platform

Spanish telecommunications operator Telefonica and Hertz Mexico have signed a multi-year agreement to roll-out a telematics solution to the whole vehicle fleet that will enable the rental car company to improve their internal processes and customer service.

Under the agreement, Telefónica is providing Hertz Mexico with an end-to-end smart mobility solution in the connected car space, in partnership with Geotab, specialists in the engineering telematics field.

With this implementation, Hertz will receive key data along the rent-a-car business cycle, as well as during the maintenance processes of the fleet. Additionally, this data will support the decision-making process bringing cost savings and improving customer experience, the Spanish telco said.

The solution provided will be connected through the Telefónica Smart M2M platform that will provide Hertz with advanced management tools regarding connectivity services.

“We believe that this telematics solution represents a big jump in our business that will enable us to deliver an excellent service with the most efficient operations,” Hertz Mexico’s CEO Moises Behar, said.

“This is a relevant case study for the industry in Latin America and an example of our expertise in how we can help our clients in their digital transformation through an IoT solution. This mobility solution will help Hertz Mexico provide an enhanced experience to its customers during their rental periods,” Vicente Muñoz, Chief IoT Officer at Telefónica, said.

Ericsson, China Mobile Shanghai and Mobike trial cellular IoT on live network

In related news, China Mobile Group Shanghai Company and bike-sharing service Mobike have recently joined forces to trial the latest cellular Internet of Things (IoT) technologies on a live network.

The trial provided an enhanced bike-sharing experience to Mobike users via new cellular IoT technologies.

Carried out on China Mobile Shanghai’s live network, the trial used Ericsson’s latest cellular IoT technologies to allow Mobike’s IoT-enabled bikes to be located more accurately and extend to areas that traditional coverage can hardly reach, such as underground parking lots.

Moving forward, the new technologies will also significantly reduce the time to unlock the bikes.

“The latest cellular IoT technologies like CAT-M1 and NB-IoT will greatly enhance user experience in the future and will solve the existing challenges encountered by Mobike such as coverage in challenging locations. We also expect Chinese operators to complete the nationwide deployment of cellular IoT as early as possible,” Mobile’s VP Zhongjie Yang, said.
