Ericsson, Bharti Infratel sign smart city deal in India

The agreement stipulates the deployment of 400 smart poles in Bhopal.

Ericsson signed an agreement with Indian telecommunications infrastructure firm Bharti Infratel to deploy a smart city project in the city of Bhopal, Indian press reported.

The contract was awarded by the Bhopal Smart City Development Corporation and stipulates the deployment of 400 smart poles across the city. The project is set to require total investment of $107 million and is expected to be completed within nine months.

The smart poles will be equipped with environment sensors, electric vehicle charging points, surveillance cameras, digital signage system and Wi-Fi access points, according to the reports. The smart poles will work as mobile sites powered by Ericsson’s Zero Site technology.

The smart poles will be backed by a 200 kilometer fiber optic network, which will be deployed by Bharti Infratel. The fiber network will connect government buildings, schools and bus stops in Bhopal.

According to the report, Bharti Infratel currently has an internet service provider license to offer Wi-Fi services in Bhopal, which is expected to be launched once the first 50 smart poles are operational.

Last year, Ericsson won a contract to install 15,000 smart meters for a state-owned power firm in Assam, India. The project is set to be completed in three years.
