Under the partnership, Huawei and BeWhere plan to develop M-IoT LPWA, NB-IoT and LTE-M applications
Chinese vendor Huawei recently entered a partnership with Canadian industrial internet of things (IoT) solutions provider BeWhere, to develop M-IoT LPWA, NB-IoT and LTE-M applications to enable the deployment of smart city technologies.
Huawei said that BeWhere developed an LPWA sensor prototype using Huawei’s Boudica 120, a 3GPP-based NB-IoT commercial chipset.
“As we work with our Canadian operator partners to develop solutions and applications, it is great to have a Canadian-led solution to help make these solutions a reality. We are excited about the future of M-IoT and look forward to conducting field trials with our partners,” said Steve Lu, Vice President at Huawei Canada.
Huawei highlighted that in order to realize the potential of IoT LPWA solutions in smart cities requires collaboration among all parties in the ecosystem, including telecom operators and LWPA solution providers to focus on developing innovative capabilities, technology solutions and partnerships.
Headquartered in Toronto, Canada, BeWhere designs and manufacturers hardware with sensors and software applications to track real-time information on movable assets. The company develops mobile applications, middle-ware and cloud based solutions that stand-alone or that can be integrated with existing software.
Swisscom to launch NB-IoT, LTE-M in 2018
In other IoT news, Swiss telecommunications operator Swisscom said it will commercially launch NarrowBand-IoT (NB-IoT) and LTE-M technologies in 2018 in a move to pave the way for the increasing expansion of the IoT market.
The telco said the low power network will be made available to 90% of the Swiss population by the end of this year. Swisscom said that the two technologies are based on the 3GPP standard and are compatible with 4G and 5G. Initial tests with pilot customers will be carried out before the end of 2017.
