China Mobile to bring Huawei CloudFabric to OpenStack project
Huawei announced it will use its CloudFabric solution to enable the development of a private cloud resource pool for China Mobile data centers in Hohhot and Harbin. The goal is to aid the digital transformation of China Mobile as it transitions from conventional IT systems to a centralized cloud computing platform. Both data centers are set to support China Mobile as it extends its private cloud resource pools, according to the company.
Huawei announced last month its CloudFabric Solution was able to help China Mobile subsidiary Migu develop elastic, intelligent and accurate converged data center IT resource pools. The company’s software-defined networking (SDN)-based CloudFabric Solution was designed to address hurdles in the age of cloud computing, including the increase in internal traffic in data centers. According to the Cisco Global Cloud Index, total global data center traffic is expected to reach 15.3 ZB annually by 2020, with 92 % of all workloads being processed in the cloud by 2020.
“Cloud computing is one of the key strategies of China Mobile,” Huawei said in an announcement. “Based on its definition of cloud computing systems, China Mobile mainly uses private cloud to provide cloud-based infrastructure services for its internal IT systems, including business platforms, IT support systems, and other internal systems. China Mobile’s existing five private cloud resource pools can hardly meet its increasing demand for resources, making it a pressing need to build a larger resource pool.”
China Mobile currently has five private resource pools, which are challenged to meet an increase in demand for resources. Consequently, the Chinese vendor decided to build a larger resource pool. The first phase of the project was completed in 2016. The second phase is expected to be much bigger, making it the largest OpenStack resource pool in the world once completed, according to the company.
Huawei reports its CloudFabric solution has been deployed at over 1,200 data centers in more than 120 countries. The technology is in accordance with China Mobile’s POD and multi-tier Spine-Leaf network architecture. The company said the introduction of distributed gateways, SDN DCI, resource network deployment will be automated to provide high-reliability and high-performance forwarding services for various companies.
