Collision provides a flexible and scalable software-only solution that allows massive performance increases to any vendor’s M-MIMO system for LTE and 5G.

Similar to the advantages it has demonstrated with its C-RAN technology, Collision Communications has applied its unique signal processing techniques and expertise to develop a solution for Massive MIMO (“M-MIMO”) systems, realizing dramatic performance gains on both the Uplink and Downlink over what industry can achieve.  In fact, Collision can achieve 98.8% of what is theoretically possible under real world scenarios with M-MIMO. As a Physical-Layer software solution, this technology can be applied in a flexible manner to a wide variety of M-MIMO systems and configurations, is scalable, and enables exciting new opportunities to maximize spectral resources for LTE and 5G.  Furthermore, Collision is able to implement this technology today with partnering vendors.

The cellular industry has been developing and beginning to deploy M-MIMO technologies that provide notable improvements to the networks. These are being implemented though with legacy signal processing technology that does not take full advantage of the potential M-MIMO can provide.

Collision has pioneered a body of technology based on the application of advanced signal processing for the Physical-Layer in modern communication systems.  Interference can cripple a cellular network’s performance. At the same time, purposely causing signals to interfere and combine in particular ways can significantly boost performance. Collision’s novel algorithmic approaches to solving network problems are based on applying sophisticated math that understands, pulls apart, suppresses, combines, or otherwise leverages interfering signals at the waveform level.  By having these capabilities, significant gains in network performance and spectral efficiencies can be realized – in some cases Collision has shown gains that exceed 10x over what industry is doing. This body of technology can be applied to a large variety of solutions for LTE and 5G that work within the existing base station hardware offered by vendors as a pure software installation.

Collision now provides a M-MIMO solution, and is able to yield phenomenal performance gains to both the Uplink and Downlink.  This M-MIMO solution has been shown to realize performances that are extremely close to what is theoretically the maximum possible under real network conditions – 98.8% on the Uplink and 84.8% on the Downlink.

Industry techniques are only 66.6% and 54.2%, respectively. Collision’s ability to provide this increased performance is partially the result of its capability of realizing near-perfect channel estimates and applying those to its equalization and beamforming techniques for the uplink and the downlink. Collision has shown on average a 17x reduction in channel estimate error alone.

This scalable solution supports a wide variety of antennas systems and network configurations, and has the flexibility to provide the processing for different types and sizes of antenna arrays.

Collision can take things one step further and enable distributed sites, including those with M-MIMO antenna systems on them, to work together to provide downlink distributed CoMP with true joint transmission, all while utilizing typical backhaul connections between the sites.  This provides even further performance gains.

This technology is flexible, scalable, and adaptable to the variety of equipment and networks that industry is interested in deploying, and allows these networks to make the most of the precious spectrum they have for both LTE and 5G.  Collision’s M-MIMO solution in particular provides the sophistication needed to take full advantage of the great opportunity M-MIMO can provide to modern networks.

Collision works with equipment vendors to enhance their products, and with network operators to improve their network performance.  Contact Collision to learn more at [email protected] or visit www.collisioncomms.com.
