ZTE, Qualcomm to launch LTE-V2X technology in China next year

The two companies are working to develop both roadside units and onboard units supporting this technology

 

Chinese vendor ZTE is strengthening its strategic investments into the transportation and automotive market, the company said in a statement.

ZTE is in the process of developing both roadside units (RSUs) and onboard units (OBUs) supporting 3GPP Release 14 LTE Vehicle-to-Everything (LTE-V2X) featuring Qualcomm’s cellular V2X chipset solution.

LTE-V2X is a global solution for vehicle communications designed to support improved traffic efficiency, automotive safety, and automated driving. LTE-V2X is supported broadly by both telecommunications and automotive ecosystems, including the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), which just exceeded 100 global members; both ZTE and Qualcomm are 5GAA members.

LTE-V2X supports direct communications to enable Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) communications on the 5.9 GHz ITS band, ZTE said.

“ZTE has been committed to developing products to support 5G, LTE-V2X and the Internet of Things segments, and end-to-end solutions for the cloud-connected network and core 5G business,” said Wang Xiang, senior vice president of ZTE Corporation. “We are very pleased to work with Qualcomm Technologies to deliver roadside and vehicle units for LTE-V2X, as well as to commercially deploy LTE-V2X in China as we believe the technology will have a profound impact in driver safety and traffic efficiency. We are working with other key players in the automobile and traffic management field to build out the LTE-V2X ecosystem and to jointly explore how to drive the development of the connected vehicle industry as we move towards the deployment of 5G.”

“We are excited to extend our long-standing relationship with the ZTE Corporation in the connected vehicle space to the broader intelligent transportation industry with their introduction of LTE-V2X-based RSUs and OBUs to help improve traffic management and safety in China,” said Nakul Duggal, vice president of product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Aligning efforts with a telecommunications leader such as ZTE is a significant step to support the commercial deployments of LTE-V2X technology starting as early as next year.”
