In this phase of the trial, Huawei tested 5G technology via 2.6 GHz spectrum
Chinese vendor Huawei confirmed it has completed 5G New Radio testing using 2.6 GHz spectrum in the 5G trial organized by the IMT-2020 (5G) promotion group.
To date, Huawei has officially completed the third phase of China’s 5G Technology R&D trial including laboratory and field testing in nonstandalone and stand alone scenarios.
The most mainstream NR frequency bands, including 3.5 GHz and 4.9 GHz, were tested in earlier phases, Huawei said.
This 2.6 GHz test was conducted in a Huairou 5G trial field and a lab owned by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, using Huawei’s 5G massive MIMO technology.
The successful verification of Huawei’s 2.6 GHz NR technology proves that 2.6 GHz can be one of the choices for operators to deploy 5G NSA/SA commercial network, Huawei said.
Yang Chaobin, president of Huawei’s 5G product line, said: “In the early stage of 5G network deployment, C-Band and 2.6 GHz are undoubtedly the most mainstream frequency bands. The C-Band industry chain is gradually becoming mature under the joint efforts of all of us. Similarly, the industry chain of 2.6 GHz needs to be promoted together.”
In the past three years, Huawei has conducted a large number of 5G NR verification tasks under the organization of the IMT-2020(5G) promotion group in China. The lab and field tests of all 5G Sub6GHz mainstream frequency bands have been completed, the vendor said.
Huawei also said that it will continue to conduct extensive 5G trials with the IMT-2020 (5G) promotion group during 2019, including VoNR (Voice over New Radio) and terminal chip interoperability tests in order to pave the way for 5G commercial trials in 2020.
China’s 5G R&D tests started in 2016. These tests involve three phases, namely key technologies testing, the verification of technology and solution, and 5G system verification. Huawei has completed the NSA aspects of the third-phase tests in Huairou, Beijing and will now move on to conduct tests for SA networking scenarios.
The IMT-2020 (5G) promotion group was jointly established in 2013 by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Science and Technology, based on the original IMT-Advanced Promotion Group. In China, it is the primary platform through which 5G research and international exchange and cooperation is conducted.
Operators participating in the IMT-2020 Promotion Group include China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom and Japanese telecoms operator NTT DoCoMo. Vendors which are part of the initiative are Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson, Nokia, Datang and Samsung. A number of chipset and test measurement vendors, including Qualcomm, Intel, Mediatek, Ctec, Keysight Technologies and Rohde & Schwartz are also part of the initiative.
