Amazon Web Services has joined the board of the LoRa Alliance, alongside US telecoms company Charter Communications, German untility Netze BW, and US LoRaWAN operator Senet.
Members from each company will serve on the alliance board for the 2020-2021 period, at least, joining existing board members Actility, Alibaba, Cisco, MachineQ (Comcast), Kerlink, Orange, Sagemcom, Semtech, STMicroelectronics, and Tencent.
Donna Moore, chief executive and chairwoman at the LoRa Alliance, said: “As we have grown as an organisation our membership composition has broadened, and it is exciting to see the board also reflect this evolution.”
The new recruits are Karthik Ranjan, part of the IoT team at Amazon Web Services (AWS), Manish Jindal, group vice president for wireless at Charter Communications, and Matthias Gross, vice president at Netze BW, and Dave Kjendal, chief technology officer at Senet.
They said they would seek to accelerate standards development within the LoRa Alliance, and the growth of LoRaWAN networks, deployments and applications.
Jindal at Charter Communications said: “I look forward to provide tier-one service provider’s prospective [sic] and vision of open standardised LPWA networks where partners can collaborate and enrich the ecosystem in order to build smarter communities and planet.”
Gross at Netze BW, which is rolling out a LoRaWAN network in the southwest of Germany, commented: “We will use [the network] to optimise our electricity grid operations, and also offer the network and services to other users, such as municipalities and industry.”
Dave Kjendal, chief technology officer at Senet, said: “As a founding member of the LoRa Alliance and operator of the largest public, carrier-grade LoRaWAN network in the US, Senet is particularly interested in continuing to enhance the openness, interoperability and compatibility throughout the entire LoRaWAN ecosystem.”
