Ericsson has announced Norway-based Tampnet, a prime mover in the supply of private LTE and 5G networks, is using its IoT Accelerator platform for the management of industrial IoT sensors and monitoring equipment in the offshore oil and gas, wind energy, and maritime industries.
Tampnet, headquartered in Stavanger, holds spectrum for offshore cellular deployments variously at 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1.8 GHz and 2.6 GHz. It claims to operate the “largest offshore high capacity networks” in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, designed for the energy and maritime sectors. It also manages a private LTE network for Ørsted’s Hornsea One, the world’s largest offshore wind farm, 120 kilometres off the UK coast.
Tampnet has offices in Stavanger, in Norway, and in the UK, the Netherlands, the US, and Brazil. It has a long-standing relationship with fellow Nordic firm Ericsson, including for the provision of private cellular networking gear in various of its offshore Industry 4.0 deployments. Swedish vendor Ericsson claims 8,500-odd enterprises use its Ericsson IoT Accelerator capabilities, mostly via mobile operator customers.
A statement said: “Through the use of SIM cards, wearables can be deployed to employees, equipment and other assets, enabling instant actions on real-time data and the optimization of planning operations through Tampnet’s 4G LTE network. Operations, asset integrity, and maintenance teams can collect live data, connect with remote specialists, and turnaround work scopes efficiently with the assurance that all quality checks can be completed and verified in real time.”
