DT replaces Huawei with Mavenir for its 5G core

The partnership ‘creates the foundation for 5G SA,’ says Mavenir CEO

In response to pressure from the U.S., Deutsche Telekom (DT) has, like many other European operators, been working to replace Huawei equipment within its 5G network, and this week, finally revealed that relatively new entrant Mavenir is its preferred vendor for a converged packet core.

Recently, DT announced the deployment of a cloud-native 5G core in Germany on an existing Kubernetes-based platform. The company’s CTO Dr. Abdurazak called such deployments “a key milestone in the evolution of [DT’s] 5G architecture.”

“This sets us on a path towards a fully automated network with the reliability, massive scale and flexibility required to deliver innovative 5G SA [Standalone] services to our consumer and enterprise customers,” added Mudesir.

The Mavenir Converged Packet Core supports data, voice and messaging services, as well as network slicing, a network architecture in which “slices” of a network are isolated and tailored to fulfill the requirements of a particular application. This feature is one of the biggest promises of 5G SA.

Additional key elements of the Mavenir solution include an open architecture, cloud-native design and third-party vendor network function (NF) integration.

“The Mavenir solution deployed with Deutsche Telekom in Germany creates the foundation for the future introduction of 5G standalone enabling new applications and services to take advantage of 5G features such as low latency and network slicing,” said Mavenir CEO Pardeep Kohli.
