Push the Sport Mode button on your voice network

Let’s talk about Voice over New Radio (VoNR) and begin with an analogy. I like analogies because they can bring dry technical topics to life.

Many cars today feature a Sport Mode button. Press this and the car behaves in a completely new and more exciting way. At first you don’t notice much difference, the car runs normally, giving a familiar, everyday driving experience. But, as you push the accelerator pedal harder, the car’s character changes. Same engine, same gearbox, but now you get faster responses and much more exciting driving involvement. 

5G Standalone Core is rather like a Sport Mode for voice networks where 5G radio network is already in place, delivering better performance in the form of VoNR. You instantly get the quick call setup, crystal clear voice quality and high reliability familiar with Voice over LTE (VoLTE) but push the technology further and completely new experiences come alive.

With a 5G Standalone Core, voice is a use case which can be easily packaged with other peer-to-peer data services that use the 5G network’s capabilities such as high bandwidth and low latency. By combining 5G Standalone Core non-voice use cases with voice service we can create entirely new and exceptional experiences.

Voice turbocharges experiences

Let’s look at three possibilities.

The first example is to enable voice control of Internet of things (IoT) devices. Such a service exploits the core’s extensive programmability from the Telephony Application Server through to IoT management Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Since the 5G core can handle many different types of IoT device, all that is needed is an application to connect them to enable real-time IP-Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) call commands and speech recognition to guide different IoT deployments.

Or how about a service that enhances the experience of Augmented / Virtual Reality gaming? The network’s low latency can be combined with high-quality IMS voice calls between players to add an extra dimension of immersive interaction in gaming.

Our third example is Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) for enterprises. As well as providing high quality 5G data connections for enterprises, you could offer integrated business-focused voice services. With a single high bandwidth FWA offer, an enterprise could get a full set of data and voice services tailored to its business needs.

These are straightforward examples, but the possibilities are endless because there is no technological limit to the innovation that can be created. VoNR enables more compelling and diverse services when we combine voice with other 5G-enabled high value services. 

Voice is a familiar, well-used service, but with VoNR you can make it more exciting with superior services. Sounds very much like the way a car’s Sport Mode button transforms the familiar driving experience.
