Carlsberg makes beer taps smart with cellular IoT and cloud analytics

Danish IoT MVNO Onomondo has been appointed to supply global IoT connectivity to brewing company Carlsberg Group to connect draught beer taps in pubs, bars, and restaurants around the world. The solution includes an IoT management platform, integrated into Carlsberg’s new DaughtMaster cloud analytics solution, to provide data insights into sales patterns and technical issues, and to provider a base with which to further “digitise its operations”.

Carlsberg plans to deploy the DraughtMaster solution in 10 countries, starting in 2024. Onomondo claims to be able to connect to 630 cellular networks in 180 countries, via its so-called Network Marketplace. It said trials have already helped Carlsberg to achieve a 30 percent reduction in transmitted data, compared to previous IoT solutions. The DraughtMaster platform resides in the cloud with AWS. 

Onomondo will supply connectors to eliminate the need for intermediate servers and provide protection against interception. It said its software enables Carlsberg to troubleshoot remotely and reduce downtime. A statement said the solution will “digitise” and “improve the way a draught installation runs”. Carlsberg will get real-time data on “what’s selling at what time of day [and] in which type of outlet – and obtain early warning of any technical problems.”

Henrik Aagaard, chief technology officer at Onomondo, said: “Onomondo’s objective has always been to serve a global client base and provide a simplified and unified network that provides IoT solutions with optimal coverage. By collaborating with Carlsberg, we have built a solution that can function wherever its beer is consumed. This is particularly important given the phasing out of 2G and 3G worldwide, making it crucial for the network and devices to demonstrate adaptability and remain future-proof.”

Gregory Thomas, senior director at Carlsberg, commented: “Before working with Onomondo, we identified three key challenges for a successful rollout of the DraughtMaster system: operating devices on a global scale, secure transmission of data to cloud environments, and constant connectivity and functionality. This is a challenge that usually requires a patchwork of service providers, but by implementing Onomondo’s IoT SIMs and core network into our system, these headaches are removed in one fell swoop.” 

Last year, Onomondo completed a $21 million investment round led by equity investment firm Verdane. The company’s new SoftSIM solution, launched this year, based on an iSIM prototype, is billed as “the world’s first 100 percent software and agnostic IoT SIM”.
