EIGHT CELLULAR OPERATORS TAKING PART IN CDMA TEST

BELLEVUE, Wash.-Eight cellular operators are participating in a Seattle trial of Code Division Multiple Access digital cellular technology.

Four participants actively involved in tests with U S West NewVector Group Inc. and Motorola Inc. are AirTouch Cellular, formerly PacTel Corp., Alltel Mobile Communications, Sprint Cellular Co. and CRM Movicom, a cellular operator in Argentina.

Those carriers have announced plans to deploy CDMA technology. Four other carriers also are involved in the trial as passive participants, carriers that have not yet committed to CDMA but want to learn more about it. Passive participants will have access to test results and performance measurements, U S West said. Passive participants include Nynex Mobile Communications, Ameritech Cellular Services, and Canada’s B.C. Tel Mobility and Bell Mobility.

U S West placed its first CDMA calls over the pre-commercial network in January.
