ERICSSON REPORTS SALES INCREASE

STOCKHOLM, Sweden- L.M. Ericsson’s first quarter financial results produced net sales of $4 billion, a 36 percent increase from $2.9 billion during the same period a year ago.

Net income for the three-month period ended March 31, grew 30 percent to $17.8 million, or 18 cents per share, compared with $13.7 million, or 14 cents per share for first quarter 1996.

Ericsson’s mobile systems unit accounted for $1.7 billion of the company’s first quarter net revenues and mobile phone equipment accounted for about $1.2 billion. Europe (excluding Sweden) and Asia continue to lead as net revenue generating regions, accounting for $1.7 billion and $860 million, respectively. Sweden alone yielded $254 million net sales and the United States and Canada produced about $480 million.
