Regarding this past Monday’s editorial, I have a couple of comments.
First, Mercury PCS is based in Jackson, Miss., not in Texas. Second, while I did tell Debra Wayne that some bidders’ trailing digits were nothing more than lucky numbers, I don’t recall using the hokey, leprechaunesque term “lucky charms.” And with respect to that, what exactly did you mean by “Oooh.” I didn’t get it.
The real question in my mind is: What internal squabble between High Plains and Mercury PCS, who share some of the same owners, caused this brou-ha-ha in the first place?
Finally, I think that with “Play nice or don’t play at all,” you come to the wrong conclusion, at least from a government economist’s point of view. The Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice need to be convinced that in the personal communications services auctions, competition is sufficiently robust because bidders were NOT playing too nicely.
