MOSCOW-Globalstar L.P. and Rostelecom JSC, Russia’s largest telecommunications operator, signed an agreement to form a joint venture company that will provide mobile satellite services in Russia.
Globalstar Space Telecommunications (GlobalTel) will act as the exclusive provider of Globalstar services in Russia, said the companies. The new joint venture company is the owner and operator of the Globalstar ground segment, and it will have responsibility for interconnecting the Globalstar system with Russia’s existing wireline and wireless infrastructure.
Rostelecom will be the majority owner of GlobalTel, which expects to serve more than 150,000 subscribers in Russia by 2002.
