AT&T WIRELESS INC. PREPARES FRESNO POLICE FOR FIELD REPORTS

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif.-AT&T Wireless Inc. has partnered with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department to provide automated field reporting to officers.

By using AT&T’s packet data network, officers will be equipped with a handheld device that will enable them to access the most-used functions from command buttons. The devices are designed to be carried with the officer and put into a car mount system in the patrol car to recharge the batteries when the unit is not in use.

The functions include photo imaging, criminal history, vehicle registration, physical description and warrant checks.

The sheriff’s department said the software for the device is pen-based, and the pen functions both as a writing instrument and as a mouse. Officers can write out reports and print them from a printer located in their car trunk.

The system also will feature a reference guide that gives access to penal codes, vehicle codes and county street guides, which will use a global positioning system interface to show officers the fastest route to the scene of an incident, and a mapping capability that will enable dispatch to know where each of its units is located and send the nearest unit to the scene, said the department.

AT&T said it plans to provide the department with 187 devices.
