Computer Associates International Inc. introduced a new wireless application infrastructure designed to give companies the ability to introduce corporate applications to mobile workers.
The system is called The Wireless Intelligent Infrastructure Support Technology, or Twist. Firms incorporating the system will be able to implement mobile applications across their entire enterprise network, CA said.
Twist combines the expertise of CA, Paging Network Inc. and the Palm Computing Inc. subsidiary of 3Com Corp. The system uses CA’s Unicenter TNG enterprise management solution, designed to ensure the availability, integrity and security of services delivered to devices by wireless links that do not feature dedicated connections to the enterprise network.
It also uses CA’s Jasmine TND intelligent information infrastructure and Global Professional Services. Jasmine TND is a data support function promoting efficient use and effective presentation of data by diverse sources.
The GPS division is expected to work with PageNet’s VAST Wireless Solutions group, in particular its customer support team, to help customers deploy new wireless applications using the Twist infrastructure. Any wireless integration issues, problems or questions will be handled by the VAST team, according to PageNet.
Another key component to Twist, from PageNet, is the Wireless Extension for Unicenter TNG, developed jointly by CA and PageNet. The Wireless Extension service allows remote systems administrators to monitor computer networks, receive problem alerts and initiate corrective measures from paging devices.
Finally, the solution incorporates the Palm Computing platform, allowing wirelessly enabled personal digital assistants like the Palm Pilot and Palm III to operate on the system.
