TELE DANMARK BUYS INTO NORWEGIAN OPERATOR

COPENHAGEN-Danish telecommunications operator Tele Danmark said it bought into the Norwegian wireless market and raised its stake in Polish mobile carrier Polkomtel.

Tele Danmark is 42-percent owned by Ameritech Corp.

Tele Danmark said it acquired 19.6 percent of Norwegian NetCom ASA from Singapore Telecom, paying $347.8 million, or $37.50 per share. The company also invested $63.4 million in the share capital of Polkomtel, of which it already owns 19.25 percent.

Tele Danmark Chief Executive Officer Henning Dyremose said the company’s purchase of the NetCom shares was a decisive step in “implementing its Nordic strategy,” although he did not elaborate on the strategy.

Tele Danmark also announced future plans to further expand its 20.8-percent holding in Czech carrier Ceske Radiokomunikace.
