STOCKHOLM, Sweden -L.M. Ericsson reported July 29 that German cellular operator T-Mobil has now deployed its Ericsson General Packet Radio Service system for testing. The T-Mobil-Ericsson GPRS contract was the first announced in the world back in January.
The Ericsson GPRS packet-switching equipment, installed in Bonn, is undergoing extensive testing, including interworking with other suppliers’ equipment, said Ericsson. T-Mobil plans to extend the scope of these first live trials and offer commercial services next year.
T-Mobil also awarded a GPRS contract to Alcatel in February.
As of early July, Alcatel, Ericsson and Nokia were leading in terms of worldwide GPRS contracts, according to data from Warburg Dillon Read. Most of the contracts awarded have been from European operators, with a few in Asia.
