Verizon expands ringbacks to New England

WOBURN, Mass.-Verizon Wireless continued to expand its ringback service, making the application available to users in New England.

With the new service, subscribers in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont can choose clips from more than 2,400 songs from Sony BMG Music Entertainment for callers to hear instead of traditional rings. Verizon initially launched ringback tones in a handful of California markets last year and hopes to roll out the application nationwide by the end of the year.

Many U.S. carriers are scrambling to deploy ringbacks, which have gained substantial traction in overseas markets. T-Mobile USA is the lone Tier 1 carrier to offer nationwide service, and several smaller carriers have launched ringbacks in recent months.

Verizon users paying a $1 monthly subscription fee can access one ringback tone for a year for $2.
