DENVER-VeloCom Inc. announced Canbra Telefonica, its consortium in Brazil, awarded a $500 million, five-year contract to Nortel Networks to design and build a wireless network to deliver telephone and data services to customers in Rio de Janeiro and 15 other states in northern Brazil.
Nortel Networks will develop a complete network solution to include its Proximity II and cdmaOne fixed wireless access equipment, digital switching systems, optical Internet solutions and call center equipment.
Deployment will begin immediately in Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Bahia, said VeloCom. Commercial service is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter.
