BELLSOUTH WINS GUATEMALA WIRELESS LICENSE

ATLANTA-A BellSouth Corp.-led consortium won a $26 million license to provide nationwide wireless communications service in Guatemala. BellSouth and its Panama-based partner, Multi Holding Corp., expect to begin service in Guatemala, the largest Central American nation with a population of 11 million, by mid-2000.

Guatemala is the 10th market BellSouth has secured in its Latin American expansion efforts, and the company now provides cellular phone service to nearly 5.5 million Latin American customers.

BellSouth will own 60 percent of the Guatemalan operation, and MHC will own the remaining 40 percent. The two companies jointly own and operate BSC de Panama, a cellular operator serving 100,000 customers in Panama.
