Qualcomm cuts jobs following Kyocera sale

SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. will cut hundreds of jobs as a result of selling its mobile-phone division to Japanese vendor Kyocera Corp., the company said.

Qualcomm is transferring employees from its consumer products and personal electronics divisions to Kyocera and a Qualcomm subsidiary, newly created to assist Kyocera, said Christine Trimble, Qualcomm spokeswoman.

When the sale was announced in December, Qualcomm employed 4,000 workers in both the QCP and QPE divisions. Qualcomm said it moved many of those employees into the corporation.

Trimble did not comment on how many people lost their jobs, but said the number was less than 1,000.
