STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson signed two deals providing increased capacity to wireless telecommunications providers.
A $300 million contract with Mannesmann Mobilfunk will provide Global System for Mobile communications system equipment to optimize infrastructure and to multiply current capacity for the German mobile provider.
A major portion of Mannesmann’s base stations installed in Germany are already connected via Ericsson’s MINI-LINK wireless transport solutions with plans this year to install more than 1,200 new links.
“We consider this contract as a mark of Mannesmann’s confidence in our technological know-how and a result of our close and successful cooperation,” noted Bjorn Eisner, Ericsson vice president in Germany and responsible for the company’s activities with Mannesmann Mobilfunk.
Ericsson and Malaysia-based Celcom Sdn Bhd also signed a $170 million agreement to expand Celcom’s network. The scope of the agreement is for the supply of present and future communications equipment and services.
The deal initially encompasses GSM system infrastructure and services to meet Celcom’s increasing subscriber base. Celcom will purchase several of the latest solutions from Ericsson’s GSM portfolio, including its open General Packet Radio Service and WAP system, GSM on the Net and WISE High-Speed Internet solution.
