Wireless contributes to SBC’s growth during 1Q

SAN ANTONIO-SBC Communications Inc. reported increased first-quarter growth driven by expansion in its data communications, wireless and international operations.

Operating revenue was up 6.5 percent from $11.8 billion in the first quarter of 1999 to $12.5 billion in 2000.

While net income was down from $1.9 billion in 1999 to $1.8 billion during the first quarter of 2000, diluted earnings per share increased from 51 cents per share in the first quarter of last year to 53 cents per share this year.

SBC noted its domestic wireless subscriber revenues grew more than 30 percent during the first quarter of 2000 to $1.5 billion. The company also gained 338,000 wireless customers before additions attributable to acquisitions, and it had 19.2-percent growth, to $199 million, in equity income from international investments, compared with the first quarter of 1999.
