Priority Wireless, a unit of United Pan-Europe Communications, said it won a license to implement a wireless local loop system in Finland. The 26 GHz license covers the nine most populous areas of Finland, including Helsinki. Priority Wireless plans to begin rolling out the network this year and is required to implement a portion of the network by May 2001, the report said.

France

The French government said it will issue in May calls for tender for four Universal Mobile Telecommunications System phone licenses, Reuters reported. The third-generation licenses will be granted through a “beauty contest.” Three of the licenses are expected to be awarded to the country’s three wireless incumbent operators, France Telecom, Cegetel-backed SFR and Bouygues Telecom.
