Powertel unveils GSM chat serªvice

WEST POINT, Ga.-Powertel Inc., a personal communications services provider serving the southeastern United States, introduced its PowerChat text message service designed to deliver messages between Powertel and other Global System for Mobile communications digital handsets worldwide.

“PowerChat is Powertel’s customized version of short text messaging and gives our customers the ability to `chat’ with one another in a mobile environment,” explained Paul Hanna, vice president of new business opportunities for Powertel. “It’s the perfect complement to voice communications and provides all the convenience of both voice and text in a single device.”

Powertel said up to 100 phone numbers of PowerChat friends can be stored on the GSM subscriber identity module card for easy access.

Powertel also unveiled plans for prepaid customers to purchase minutes online at the company’s Web site in addition to purchasing airtime at a store. The company’s prepaid calls, both local and long-distance, are billed at 35 cents per minute, with international calls billed at 60 cents per minute.
